We have designed our latest venue here in Farnham to be a members only "club", to give an added sense of community between our members, all of which are local or working in the area who get to know each other, swap ideas and networks and give that sense of community.

Most of our members have the facility to work from home, but prefer what we can offer them in terms of a productive environment and that separation of work from home again.

Flexibility Month by Month

As a member, you can have access to The Space on a flexible basis, and members can change your subsription month by month (perfect for when you are predicting a busy, head-down month followed by an intermittent requirement for what we offer).

We offer access daily (which can be split over 2 half days), part time (6 days a month) or full time.

Can I expense Coworking to my Employer

More and more employers are allowing coworking to expense their coworking venue. When Covid and the subsequent wfh requirement first landed, employers were allowing an employee to expense if there are exceptional circumstances (space, children, intermittent internet etc), but we are seeing more and more employers realising the step up in productivity from utilising a venue such as The Space in Farnham and allowing staff to expense Co-working.

How The Space Has Adapted

The Space was already designed in January to be a low density coworking or workspace in Farnham, we only have desks for up to 15 hotdesks in our centre across 2 floors in our charming centre on East Street. The historic building has vaulted ceilings, huge sash windows and oozes character right in the centre of Farnham so is already light, airy and has the feeling of space.

So when Covid arrived we were lucky as we didn’t have to make many changes. What we did do was half the number of desks for our co-working members and do all the necessary sanitisation precautions that have now become the norm with Covid and the return to work.

We have also changed our offer as the market has opened up significantly for us to now include the commuter that was previously very used to travelling to London every day. Now commuting from Farnham station (or Alton, North Camp station etc) has become significantly less attractive we have a much wider audience where working from home isn’t ideal (children, both partners working at home, unreliable broadband, lack of space etc).

As well as those that benefit from the facilities we offer (super fast WiFi, free printing, scanning, height adjustable desks), there has been lots in the media recently about the benefits of separating working from home. In The Times today it talked about the dangers of “Living for Work”, something we are passionate about helping our members avoid...

We hear time and time again from our members on how they see the benefits of having somewhere local to work, so home is home and work is work without having to commute on the train. That’s why we pioneered #worknearhome and major on the advantages we give to the commuter from Farnham.

How the COVID-19 virus will change co-working and working from home..

After 3+ weeks of working from home in and around Farnham, we are curious how the workplace will change once the brakes are lifted in Surrey and people start to return to work.

Things for sure will have changed in that even the most traditional leaders and managers must have changed their view on how productive their team can be working from home. I for one have found some aspects truly challenging (the locked in a room syndrome and the lack of human intervention), but equally there are aspects that I have enjoyed (eating with the family at a reasonable hour, not commuting, walking the dog for your screen-break) and sometimes productivity has shot up (ability to really focus etc).

Will the Workplace return to normality after COVID-19?

A lot will depend on the culture of your employer, or indeed your own work culture if you are a freelancer or sole-employee. I read a fascinating blog by Farnham coach Beth Hood on what and how in remote working and the importance of a low-trust v high-trust working culture. That aside we are for sure certain that employers will change their attitude, even for the more traditional vocations.

Sky News today published an article stating "only 9% of Britons want life to return to 'normal' once lockdown is over" and a large part of this is our worktime (lets say 80% of our year !). So for an employer side and an employee side change to how we work is coming 100%.

How does this change coworking and working from home?

As local Farnham industry expert Zoe Ellis Moore pointed out, companies providing serviced office space are experiencing a huge upsurge in demand in the last weeks from people who are finding it too hard to work from home, enhanced by children off school, too many distractions, a crowded house or simply not enough work space in the house.

Enquiries have soared by 30%+ for one leading international coworking provider, while another of the world’s biggest players is reporting the same 30 per cent rise in the number of customers worldwide wanting to work for just three hours a day in a serviced office, and the rest of the day working from home.

“Some of them have children at home, or connectivity with the internet or mobiles isn’t reliable, or they might be living in a shared home and finding the conditions too hard to work in. People are now asking for all sorts of deals, from someone who wants to work in a serviced office 10 days in the month, to a group of bankers wanting to pay out of their own pockets for offices to work out of.”

Thanks to everyone who came to see our new Coworking Launch in Farnham last week and to the new Members that signed up to TheSpace.

It was interesting to learn about the diverse group of talent in Farnham that could benefit not only from the Coworking building, but from the network of Farnham's best freelancers, project workers and small business that we are collaborating with. Just talking to some of you we learnt a lot from what is important to host a productive place to work away from home.

Located on East Street in our brick courtyard we have taken one of our existing buildings that has a lot of history, from being a bakery in the C17th through to being the birthplace of Espa in the C20th, and transformed it in the last 6 months into a perfect location to be productive.

Designed for freelancers who could benefit from interaction with the best local brains, for homeworkers who need a productive environment through to project workers or commuters who could benefit from not travelling every day of the week but need a professional base.

Our focus is really on promoting small businesses in Farnham and we were delighted to welcome the Mayor to say a few words about how Farnham produces incredible talent and we hope we can do our bit in promoting local business. Nearly all our suppliers are local as well as the network of Farnham business that we are welcoming as members to TheSpace.

We have strived to provide the best coworking environment at our new venture TheSpace here in Farnham, Surrey, hence our investment in height adjustable desks throughout the 1st floor of our offices, so if you fancy standing whilst working, make sure you book as a member one of the 6 hotdesks on our first floor. We are not doctors but have experienced back pain so know the advantages our desks can bring.

Why Height Adjustable Desks

The benefits of height adjustable desks in a coworking space are clear in terms of comfort and wellbeing. The main problem with most computer work stations lies in what would seem contrary to natural instinct: the human body as a whole is designed to be in motion, and not to be sitting for extended periods of time. Movement is imperative for spinal health, by improving circulation and reducing muscle fatigue. Relief from Static Muscle Fatigue may only be achieved through muscle movement. Increased blood flow to fatigued muscles occurs when standing and walking, which re-energies the muscles. According to the most recent research people need to get out of their chairs and move at least five minutes per hour.

Back pain is one of the most common complaints of office or coworkers who sit all day in a serviced office or coworking building. To determine if standing desks could improve this, several studies have been done on employees with long-term back pain. Participants have reported up to a 32% improvement in lower back pain after several weeks of using standing desks. Another study published by the CDC found that use of a sit-stand desk reduced upper back and neck pain by 54% after just 4 weeks. Additionally, removal of the sit-stand desks reversed some of those improvements within a 2-week period.

Adjustable height desks allow the user to select a working position that is ideal for their body.
